We rise before the sun and slowly creep into the kitchen before anyone else wakes.

Snowdrifts shift like clouds outside of our windows and we press our noses up against the glass to watch the glittering display, the wintry tableaus.

Steam rises from a fresh cup of coffee, paired with a small piece of shortbread snuck from a forgotten tray after the decadent meal the night before. (Don’t worry, no one will notice.)

We carve out space for familiar rituals taught to us by our elders, for whom this season glowed long and bright throughout the dark winter months.

Puzzles, candles, greeting cards and cookies fill our days while memories of loved ones fill our heads reminding us that an extra dash of vanilla never hurt.

The days are cold and our hearts are warm.
