Soothing Scents – A Seasonal Simmer Pot Recipe

Soothing Scents – A Seasonal Simmer Pot Recipe

The holidays tend to welcome an array of soothing scents into the home. Festive candles and incense are often lit, baked goods and roasted items are frequently being pulled out of the oven, and the fragrance of coniferous trees seem to envelop us. In honour of the wonderful memories that scents conjure at this time of year, we thought to share one creative way to invite calming aromas into the home – free of chemicals and artificial ingredients.

This is our recipe for a ‘simmer pot’ – much like a steeped tea, but for your space to drink up and for you and your guests to enjoy. You can use almost any combination of natural ingredients that you have on hand, from dried herbs, spices, fruits and essential oils.

Assemble the dry ingredients into a simple glass jar for an elegant and unique gift to offer a host or to place in a stocking.

Here’s what you’ll need:

a small pot or saucepan for simmering – try our kaico enamel saucepan

3 slices of dried oranges

a few sprigs of fresh pine tree or fresh rosemary

2 or 3 cinnamon sticks

1 or 2 vanilla beans (if vanilla beans aren’t in the budget substitute with a splash of pure vanilla extract)

5 star anise

and, enough water to cover the ingredients

Combine all ingredients together in a saucepan and heat over low heat until simmering. Let simmer for a few hours, adding water when needed.
