Where did you two meet?

Joël and I met in 2002 when he was 16 and I was 17. So, we’ve known each other for over 16 years! Joël was in Winnipeg, visiting from his home province, Saskatchewan, for a band competition (he’s a drummer). We met after the show and exchanged contact information. When Joël went back home, he sent me a few emails to try to keep in touch, but truth be told, I never replied to them, haha! So we lost touch over the next few months until he came back to Winnipeg for another show. We were able to reconnect and from there we started writing letters (yes, snail mail!) to one another other, talking on the phone for hours on end and quickly fell in love. We’ve never looked back! Now we’re 10 years married with two incredible kids, as happy as ever!

What treasures can be found in your home these days?

What comes to mind is a beautiful Japanese inspired wooden table my dad (an avid woodworker) built for us as a Christmas gift. It sits in our living room where we display a few vintage ceramic pieces.

What’s important to you in the rooms where you live?

I think a sense of calm and simplicity. I like my space to have soft muted colours and natural materials like wood, linen, ceramics, etc. I also think it’s important to feel like you can really live in your space, so I generally stay away from anything too precious or fragile.

What keeps you balanced?

My faith in God is key, it always brings be back to what really matters in life. I also think getting together with friends and family on a regular basis keeps me sane. And of course my husband, he’s the calm to my chaos!

What is the most fulfilling or joyful part of your work?

I really love curating the collection of products for the shop – discovering new and interesting pieces that I know our customers will fall in love with. We’ve also been very fortunate to meet the loveliest people through our shop, some of which have now become our dear friends! That’s definitely been one of the highlights of running our business.

Who are your favourite designers, chefs, artisans, creative people, etc?

DeVol Kitchens – a British design house that builds the most perfect English bespoke kitchens and furniture pieces.

Jersey Ice Cream Co. – love how they mix old and new so perfectly in their interiors.

Really inspired by the work of several lifestyle photographers. Some of my favourites right now - Gillian Stevens, Olivia Thébault and Stephanie Draime.

Cassandra Ellis – she’s a British furniture designer who has also recently launched a stunning collection of interior paint colours. I love how she describes the colours as being “deeply rooted in the natural world, as well as personal memories, marks and fragments”.

UK designer, Ilse Crawford, for her democratic design philosophy - “Beauty has no boundaries. It is a universal human right.”

Favourite place(s) to shop

I mostly love thrifting, browsing antique shops and hitting up flea markets. My favourite local spot is Old House Revival, a three story heritage building filled with the most beautiful collection of antique treasures.

Favourite morning beverage

Tea or warm lemon water.

Favourite afternoon beverage

Sparkling water or kombucha.

Favourite evening beverage

Tea, something herbal.

Favourite thing to do with your kids

We’re big on traditions. One of our summer favourites is bringing the kids to Lockport, a little town about 30 minutes north of Winnipeg, for the best hotdogs and fries. We grab them from Sonia’s, a hole in the wall stand on the side of the highway and then we picnic by the river. My parents started this tradition with me and my sisters years ago and we’ve loved carrying it on with our family.

What do you like to cook most for one another?

Probably a variety of things but I mostly love to prepare a home cooked meal for Joël when he comes home from work.

Favourite weekend reading materials

If I get the chance (weekends tend to be full and busy for us) I catch up on some Bible reading and then I might read through a few blog posts from my favourite ‘Remodelista’!

What is best gift you ever received?

Joël bought me a ukulele a couple years ago. Few people outside my circle of friends and family know that I LOVE to sing, it is truly one of my favourite things to do. So now I get to sing and play! It’s another outlet that keeps me grounded.

Favourite season to cook within

That’s a tough one. I think it’s a tie between summer and winter. Summer for the abundance of fresh garden produce to cook with and winter for homemade soups and stews.

Are there any places or travel experiences that have shaped you?

I travelled to Italy with my older sister and a group of other young people when I was 15. It was my first time overseas, away from my parents, which definitely made for a bit of home sickness (the homebody in me) but I was able to overcome it and embrace the incredible adventure I was on. In the first part of the trip I had the privilege of living with a lovely Italian family in the south of the country where I experienced authentic Italian life and culture. I don’t think I fully appreciated the experience as much as I do now looking back on it.

How did the seed of MÛR come to be?

Danielle and I have always had the desire to start a business and we wanted to do something together. I was working full-time as a chef in a busy restaurant group and Danielle was a stay-at-home mom taking care of our two kids.

In 2014 we became tired of the daily grind and wanted to do something that would inspire us and provide us with a better lifestyle. We wanted to be in control of our time and wanted to invest in ourselves while building something where we could reap the benefits of our labour. We evaluated our strengths, Danielle had a keen eye for beautiful products and I had an aptitude for business. After a bit of research, we decided that launching an e-commerce shop was the most obvious and best way that we could marry our passions and start a side hustle that we could grow and test on our down time. Danielle started hunting for unique goods that we could sell and worked on the aesthetics of the shop while I worked on the details, logistics and behind the scene stuff. And thus MÛR was born!

What treasures can be found in your home these days?

All of Danielle’s vintage finds that each tell a story…from unique stoneware to worn-in furniture.

What’s important to you in the rooms where you live?

Simplicity. I can’t stand clutter.

What keeps you balanced?

I would say it’s my faith. It gives me meaning, worth, purpose and perspective.

What is the most fulfilling or joyful part of your work?

Seeing what we do bring joy to others.

Who are your favourite designers, chefs, artisans, creative people etc?

I’m most moved and inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit in people, regardless of the industry.

Favourite place(s) to shop

I wouldn’t consider myself a big “shopper”, however, I enjoy shopping for my clothing online. If shopping a physical location in person I like going to specialty food markets, bakeries and shops.

Favourite morning beverage

Coffee! I like either a simple v60 pour-over or an Americano in the morning. Black.

Favourite afternoon beverage

Nothing beats an afternoon sparkling water…except maybe another coffee!

Favourite evening beverage

So many to choose from! Glass of red wine, I love a good Pinot Noir or Red Zinfandel. Scotch if I’m having a night cap, otherwise a cup of peppermint tea. All three help me to relax!

Favourite thing to do with your kids

Go out for a treat or a fun activity like catch a baseball game or grab an ice cream cone (Sargent Sundae is our go-to spot!).

What do you like to cook most for one another?

Alaskan king crab legs! We’ve been cooking this for each other on special occasions ever since we first started dating. It’s something fun that we like to stay in and do together as a sort of date night activity.

Favourite weekend reading materials

I like to do some early morning Bible reading, I also quite enjoy reading apologetics and leadership material.

What is best gift you ever received?

When I was 13 years old my grand-parents bought me my first new drum set, I was so excited I could hardly wait to get home and play them!

Favourite season to cook within

Spring. I love all the local seasonal wild mushrooms that are only available for a short season in Manitoba.

Are there any places or travel experiences that have shaped you?

New York city, love that place and I’ll never get tired of going there! And England of course. We stayed in a quaint bed & breakfast in the lake district and I absolutely fell in love with it.
